Note to Self. 40 spins around the sun have taught me this.....

Suddenly it all makes sense.

On the Eve of my 40 cycles around the earth, i felt blessed. I felt tremendous gratitude for my soul to have knocked on my door, and for my inner voice to have answered. I was at the Shivananda Ashram in the Bahamas, at awe, in the realization that my first introduction to Yoga came through the Shivananda Centre in Toronto in 1996, so long ago, and though I have travelled many paths through Yoga, it is here that I was on the eve of my 40th birthday.

As I celebrated 40 spins around the sun, and suddenly it all made sense.  Suddenly, there is a different depth of trust in life's grace and I no longer need to know all the details, of why and how, but rather I feel more at peace with where I am and I feel a more mature level of commitment for my spiritual practice that carries me through, day in and day out.

Suddenly the voice that struggled for so long to find its path, has quietly found it.  Suddenly the weight of my broken heart has lifted and the veiled of the illusion of separateness has come together to show me that neither time nor space are real boundaries for the heart, and that I am here to experience and learn about love, unconditional love.

Separation found its way to my heart on the summer of 1991, when we immigrated to Canada.  We, my mother, myself and brother, left Venezuela 23 years ago in the midst of very corrupt governments  lack of social conscience, violence, attacks on our personal safety and personal freedoms. We became immigrants in what I thought at the time was a strange country, with a language I did not speak, a culture I couldn't relate to, a winter that chilled my bones, and a one way trip that broke my soul.  Tears rolled down my cheek for 365 days in a row, and every now and then, they still find their way out of the deep layers of my teenage heart onto the face of my 40 year old body.  I guess my scar hasn't fully healed, I guess home is always our first love, and a place no other place can ever replace.  But through these 23 years as an immigrant I began to heal my heart, I began to make it my home, I began to understand and feel the greatness of being where I am, being free to speak my truth, having my rights as a human, as a woman, as a mother, as a daughter, respected and valued. I began to appreciate in my body, the peace that exists around me.  I began to appreciate and become conscious of my freedom.  I began to understand the reasons of why we left, I began to understand that growing up in a beautiful yet violent city, had left a deep imprint of fear, anxiety, and worry within me, but it has also given me one of my most precious gifts: a social conscience.

This social conscience that feels and sees too much, has led me to interact with the world through the lens of my camera, documenting all sort of stories about the human condition, the journey of social justice and human rights is one close to my heart.  Photographing stories of the human heart, stories of spiritual transformation, stories in places far away and close to home, opened new doors of perspective and awareness onto my journey and allowed me to have exposure to the spiritual ways of different cultures and traditions that otherwise I may not have had the opportunity to bare witness.

This social conscience is the seed of my dharma, and though the way in which I am engaging with the world is changing, the seed is still the same.

I am and will always be a hope activist at heart.

Through my healing journey over the last 5 years, I discovered that the road is never straight.  That it's full of wonderful twists and turns, detours, and doorways into the greater brave new worlds.  That it's full of serendipitous meetings that always leave an imprint in our souls.  The more we are able to connect within ourselves with our own sacrednesss we are able to also see the Universe- The Macrocosm symbolically at work within us and through us.

This year in particular I have surrendered to my heart, to the consciousness and the fire that burns within, and the reclaiming of the sacredness that resides deeper beyond the fire in my heart, deeper in the place where silence resides, where I feel most complete, most open, most vulnerable, most peaceful.  That space where I am truly myself, where I feel supported, nurtured and nourished by Spirit.

Along the process I have tapped into the Ashram within,  the sacred space that has always been with us.  I have choosen to answer, to surrender, to melt away into the wings of consciousness.  In me, it took a healing crisis to take the leap of faith.  In me, it took the realignment of where my body, my heart and my soul needed to go vs where my mind thought it needed to go.  In me, it took the acceptance, that I can choose, not just cope, not just have to, not just carry on, but actually CHOOSE how I deal with what happens and the shifts that ripple out of my choice to align myself ever more deeply with my true self, with my soul and with Spirit.  It's given me great strength, awareness, and a deepening of my purpose.  It has sparked the REVOLUTION WITHIN and defined that what I used to call my creative dragon is the hope activist whithin.  For that I am grateful and I know in my bones that I am exactly where I need to be and where I prayed so long ago that I would be- home within.

So as I sit on this last day of 2014, I think of all that came to pass, the twists and turns of my healing journey, and I bow into my heart with a big smile on my face and resonating with a big YES!!! and a big THANK YOU!! on my chest for heavy metals are officially OUT! and a new phase begins and the extention of the Revolution Within continues.  I'd like to think of it as a new phase of deeper integration.  And rather than make or think of my 2015 goals as resolutions, I rather think of them as a process of deeper alignment.  What and how do I choose to walk my line? What do I envision to create this year? What are the feelings, the everyday state of being that I wish to live from?  Gratitude, Love and Deep Trust are the first ones to come to mind.  How can I be of service and really, really make a difference in my community, in the world, in my life and yours?
How can we inspire each other to bring about the best in us, and live, in trust that you will be there for me and that I will be there for you.  How can we create safer communities for our children and how can we teach them to walk their line ethically, carrying honesty and a deep love and respect for the world and the people of the world?

What are you thinking for this next year to come?  Allthough every day is a new opportunity to create shift and change within us and spark our own Revolution Within as we awaken the hope activist that resides in our hearts,  this time of the year gifts us the opportunity to synch into ourselves a little deeper and begin to write a new chapter in our lives.  Time, well, she goes.  We keep spining around the sun.  What have your spins taught you?  What are the dreams you dream as we spin?  When will you start living your dreams, living what you love and in the process spark your own Revolution Within and tap into your own hope activist?

I don't have your answers.  They are only yours to be found, to be lived, to be surrendered to, to be choosen by you and only you.  You know yourself best, and most importantly it's your life.  It's your journey back to you.

On these 40 spins around the sun, and on this last day of 2014, I feel blessed, grateful, hopeful and inspired to dive deeper into the realms of alignment of body, heart, mind and soul.  I feel my compass has been set.  It is driven by my heart and the hope activist within, and it knows only one way forward. So what do you say, are you ready to roll up your sleeves and dive deeper within?

Quote of the day:

Say not, "I have found the truth," but rather, "I have found a truth."  Say not, "I have found the path of the soul."  Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path."  For the soul walks upon all paths.  The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.  The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.  ~Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, 1923

Have you been Permacultured yet? well, if you haven't get Permacultured now! The H.O.P.E Permaculture Tour is HERE!

Have you?, no really, have you?  Been permacultured lately??

I can tell you I have, it has stolen my heart, taken my dreams, and tucked them away at the end of the rainbow for me to journey on, quietly walking barefooted on the land, quietly listening to my breath, witnessing what is inside of me and outside.  It has grabbed me by the hand, and shown me a vision of what is possible, a beautiful sustainable future, where individual expression is embedded with social conscience, where compassion is at the core of our hearts, and grace, love and respect for Life rather than fear guide our journeys and our choices.

Permaculture is a system and a philosophy of creating permanent cultures using ecological design, modelled through the observation of nature, creating long term sustainable eco-systems that can be restorative, rejuvenate and take care of themselves for the most part.  "Permaculture is defined as consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for the provision of local needs.... more precisely I see Permaculture as the use of systems thinking and design principles that provide the organizing framework for implementing the above vision"- David Holmgren 'Pathways to Sustainability'.

Traditionally Permaculture is used in creating permanent sustainable gardens and farms that nourish us with delicious goodness.  Permaculture goes to great lengths into evaluating and using the relationships already present in the eco-system to their maximum potential for the benefit and sustainability of all.

But to me, Permaculture is everywhere! As much as it's principles apply to our outer landscape, they can also be used within.  As Ayurveda says, as within so is without, what exists in the Macrocosm, also exists in the Microcosm.  As much as these principles are tools for creating healthy ecosystems, they are also a means to discover and more so recover our deep ecology and our ancestral connection to the spirit of the earth.  True radiant health can only exist within once we begin to choose to create radiant health through our actions and our lives in our immediate and not so immediate environments.

So if you haven't been permacultuted yet, perhaps you will you will consider joining me and 5 others homesteaders who on Saturday October 18 & Sunday October 19th, will be co-hosting the first annual H.O.P.E. Permaculture Tour in the York-Durham Region, Ontario, Canada.  Come out & learn about permaculture design to create your own sustainable oasis!  2 days, 6 stops.

Over the past few months myself and 5 other Homesteaders in the York- Durham Regions have gotten together recognizing the need to share our experiences, as well as, inspire and provide others with the tools needed to take self responsibility over our health, the food we eat, the importance of our relationship to the earth and our deep ecology, as well as, the importance of increasing our awareness of being local in our choices.  Out of this desire to be of service the Homesteading Organically to Produce Eco-systems (H.O.P.E.) Permaculture Tour was born.

During this 2-day tour, we will be visiting 6 different homestead properties that have used permaculture principles in their design and the designers of these properties will be travelling around with the participants to answer questions throughout the weekend. A tour of each site and a workshop at each site will take place at all 6 locations. A bus and shuttle services will be provided throughout the tour.  Camping will be available at Foggy River Farm and there are also B&B's available in the area.  Light snacks and handout materials will be provided, but meals are not included. The bus will be stopping for lunch and additional shopping on both days.

For more info and registration see here: http://permaculturetour.eventbrite.com

I encourage you to check it out, come out, join us.  Spread the word, share the event!.  If you live far away, gather with your fellow homesteaders and start a H.O.P.E. Permaculture Tour of your own! It's not just a tour, it's a movement!

Yours Truly,
Your HOPE Activist,
Naty Howard.

... and then this started to happen... sweet power!

About almost a year ago something quite unique started to happen... hearts and hearts, lots of hearts would magically manifest themselves as I cut into strawberries, melons, radishes, picked up random bread crumbs from my dehydrator, random dehydrated onions... I started seeing them on the leaves on the ground as I would go into the forest, even on the rocks I dag out last week as I prepped the beds of the Mandala Gardens.... and yes yes I know, we choose to see what we want to see, but it happens so often (almost daily now) that I can't help to think that there is magic at work, or at least a message to be recognized.  Even my kids see it now! they come running to me- mom! mom! I found love!, would you believe they used to roll their eyes at me.. not just once but twice!, hand motion and all, every time I said- Hey! look at what came up! ya.. ya... ya..

Truth is in the eye of the beholder.  I believe it.  We choose to see what we want to see.  In my case, my truth is Love.  I choose to see love and I choose to let it infuse my life in every way it knows how! I thank deeply every soul love note that comes my way, as they bring joy and warmth and certainty of being on the right path for me, as the work in progress health journey that I am on.  I think the important words here are 'I choose', I choose to align myself with love, with peace, with gratitude.  'I choose' brings whatever it is 'I want' into my life, it is a process of alignment, it is not to say it will be a simple jolly journey, it might, but most likely, it will be an infusion of our jolly shadow with the jolly rawllygood days we all aspire.  'Wanting something' makes it feel far away in the future, an ever disappearing reality.  'Choosing it', makes it present, it is now a part of my life, even if at times, it seems difficult.  I will act differently knowing my choice and my deeper sense of commitment to that choice.  New habits, new thoughts, new emotions will align themselves through me according to my choices.  Committing to our choices elevates our actions and brings forth the fruits of our new chosen daily habits, thoughts, and actions.  Be inspired by your commitment, and accept the deep nourishment that comes along with it.  Challenges will arise and take us to new levels, we will continue to meet and greet our shadow self, at times not very jolly, but instead of having a head first battle, we just might embrace the challenge with an open heart, shed our tears, and release it from our core, moving on, moving on, until the next time.

When a soul love note comes your way, share it, pass it on, soon those around you may be receiving them too!

I decided to share my soul love notes with my friend Chong and this is what came back my way!  Chong is a multi-disciplined artist working and experimenting with different materials and processes in woodworking, photography, and printmaking.  Very very talented. His work can be seen at http://www.lignoandlux.ca.

Soul Love Note from the Rawllygood Kitchen

My grandmother used to make the best desserts, well, she was queen of her Kitchen, she used to make the best of everything! an interesting mix of eastern european cuisine meets south america, she stayed true to her roots and always delighted us with goodness. She used to make these, baked of course, and I have been craving them, perhaps craving her presence.  So in her honour, I have made a raw version of her recipe. Mmmh, so rawllygood!

Ginger Poppyseed Almond Cookies Recipe
2 cups of raw almonds, soaked
1 cup of chopped pitted dates, or if you don't do well with sugar substitute it for Lakanto or birch derived Xylitol, or stevia.
1/4 cup fresh orange juice
3 tbsp of honey, or more Lakanto, birch derived Xylitol, or stevia
4 tbsp of chopped fresh ginger
3 tbsp poppyseeds, soaked for 15min (activate their powers!)
1/2 tsp of allspice, or your very own masala. I like using my Nala Masala.
pinch sea salt

Start by soaking the almonds overnight, the poppy seeds just need 15 minutes or so, so soak them as you start this recipe and they will be ready to add on at the end.  First, place the soaked almonds in the food processor, and process until you have the consistency of flour.  Add the rest of the ingredients until a dough ball forms, you might have to do it in two batches. Once it is all mixed up, get a tablespoon and scoop a tbsp of mixture onto a non-stick dehydrator sheet, gently press down to make the cookies or make a dough and use your cut out shapes.  Have fun with it!.

Dehydrate for 1 hour at 145F, then 5 hr at 105F until firm enough to turn over.  Then turn onto mesh sheets and dehydrate for 4 more hrs at 105F or until desired consistency has been reached.

Things are changing around here....for the better! New Video Series: The Power of Restorative Farming!

Things are changing around here... for the better! As we continue to grow and listen within the silence of the practice, it has become very clear to me that the Rawllygood blog is a part of something bigger.  It has become clear to me that it is important to share my journey of realignment to nature and of body, mind and spirit with you.  Sharing all the tools I have used, and continue to use as part of my daily practice, lifestyle and healthier habits.  As well, it has become clear to me to be of service to others along their journey of realignment.  It is through this process of clarity that The Realign Ranch has been born.  The Realign Ranch will be a centre that supports the journey of realignment of body, mind and soul through a variety of workshops such as yoga, meditation, raw food nutrition classes, creative expression, permaculture & edible gardens.  Its mission is to be of service through the process of self-transformation that leads to spiritual growth, self realization and freedom.

Through the process of becoming The Realign Ranch, I will be doing a series of video explorations on the theme The Power Of.... , part of the process of realignment is to take full responsibility for our actions, for their consequences and for the power that is within both of them.  The video series The Power of.. will explore the power of alignment with nature, alignment of body, mind, soul through many practices that have been helpful on my journey.  As well, it will be an exploration of our Power as global citizens to affect change.  Every action and habit that we have either builds our road to optimal health and spiritual liberation or builds our road to decay and disease on a personal level and a global level.  Each one of our actions contributes to the health and ecology of our communities and the planet.  So its time to act locally and think globally, for our own health and the health and future of humanity and the earth.  The Power of.. will explore themes such as Restorative Farming, mindfulness, yoga practices, meditation, permaculture, ayurvedic traditions, raw foods, creative expressions and on and on I could go.... I think you get the point.... So come along the journey of self-discovery and exploration of the tools and practices that bring us back in touch with our true self, with liberation and freedom.

Today we begin, perhaps with baby steps, this new journey of self empowerment. I welcome you to join me and Phil Collins as we discuss The Power of Restorative Farming.   Phil Collins is the owner of Foggy River Farms and co-founder of Fresh City Farms, and I will be teaching our June 8th workshop Homesteading for Raw Nutrition along with him, here at the Realign Ranch.

Restorative Farming is based on the principles of permaculture as organic living systems that serve to to restore the land-not just sustain it, restore our bodies-phisically, mentally, our consciousness, our communities-by gathering and sharing the experience of growing food.

Sit back and enjoy the ride...

Something Old: The Science of Ayurveda, 2+2= 10,000 didn't you know?, and UFO's (Unwanted Filling Organisms!)...

Something Old:  The Science of Ayurveda

The Science of Ayurveda is the ancient science of the knowledge of life that comes from India.  It is a science that delves deeply into the wisdom of life.  It is a qualitative science that provides the understanding of the elements, principles, or forces, present in the body-mind- emotions-spirit system that are unique to each individual, both at conception (PRAKRUTI) and in our current state of being (VIKRUTI). Understanding the ratio & proportions, qualities, interrelationships and tendencies of the elements, principles or forces, within the body-mind-emotions-spirit system (Microcosm) and in relationship to our immediate external environment (Macrocosm) is key to understanding Ayurveda and it’s tools to healing and to staying in balance and harmony throughout one’s life.

According to Ayurveda there are five basic elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. These elements of creation manifest in the Macrocosm (the Universe) and in the Microcosm (human beings). In the human being they manifest in our body-mind-emotion-soul system. The five elements combine in different ratios and proportions in the human being and manifest as three doshas: Vata (Ether and Air), Pitta (Fire and Water), Kapha (Earth and Water).  Each one of us is a manifestation of unique ratios and proportions of the elements. This unique manifestation is our essential constitution. Our PRAKURTI. When the elements within us are in balance with our essential constitution, we have radiant health of body-mind-emotions-soul. When out of balance, when the ratios and proportions of the elements within us are out of balance with our essential constitution, we find ourselves in the path of disharmony and dis-ease.

Our PRAKRUTI is our essential constitution, or constitution at conception. It is our unique individual foundation.  It is the specific ratio & proportions of the elements within our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies at the moment of conception.  We are born with very specific qualities that set specific physical, emotional, mental and spiritual patterns within us.  Our PRAKRUTI reveals the blueprint of the innate tendencies that have been built into our system. It also reveals our genetic imprint and ancestral conditions & limitations, tendencies & patterns, that very much affect who we are and our state of being.  It provides us with deep and specific understanding of our body-mind-emotion-spirit system and the effects the different proportions of the elements and forces have in our present condition.  Who we are, in body, mind, emotions and spirit is a direct reflection of our PRAKRUTI constitution.   Through deeply understanding our constitution we can gain further understanding of these manifestations and tendencies and reclaim ownership of ourselves and bring balance into our lives by balancing the ratios and proportions of the Elements present within us.  Knowing our constitution is key to knowing our foundation, to “knowing our uniqueness, our hidden potentials, our challenges and lessons along with our gifts” (Ayurveda Tongue Diagnosis).

Our VIKRUTI is our current constitution. It is the current proportions of the elements present in our body-mind-emotions-spirit system that leads to ease (when VIKRUTI and PRAKRUTI are the same or close), or dis-ease (when VIKRUTI and PRAKRUTI are very different).

Knowing our PRAKURTI and our VIKRUTI is key to knowing which ‘road map’ we need to follow to lead a healthy balanced life.  The closer our VIKRUTI is to our PRAKURTI the more harmony and health we will experience.

Ayurveda also basis it’s philosophy on the Law of the Macrocosm and Microcosm. This law states that every element, natural force and principle that exists in the external Cosmic Universe (Macrocosm) also exists within us, within our body-mind-emotion-spirit system (Microcosm). Any changes or disturbances that affect the Macrocosm will have a similar affect of the Microcosm. “Everything affects everything else, and everything is in constant change” and “Like increases Like, Opposites heal” are two core concepts of Ayurveda. This interconnectedness and interrelationship is key to Ayurveda as a tool for natural deep root healing. When we become aware of the power of alignment and change in the Macrocosm, to change and balance the Microcosm, we allow ourselves to experience profound transformational healing, personal growth, well-being and transpersonal healing. We align ourselves with the laws of nature and Cosmic Universal Consciousness.

Ayurveda is a holistic approach to healing and to understanding our inherited gifts and limitations to follow a path of peace & harmony, health & happiness. It is the deepest and most complete source of knowledge and wisdom that acknowledges our individuality and the many layers of our existence. It acknowledges the journey, the healing, our inherited constitutions, and provides the tools for deep root healing instead of symptom based healing, once our present constitution is off balance.

Ayurveda is a system that believes in the prevention of disease, it is a tool that offers clarity and an abundance of information on how to stay healthy & vibrant, or bring ourselves back to well-being through cleansing practices and staying in tune with our own constitution, balancing the Elements, forces and principles within us through diet, herbs, essential oils, breathwork, movement, emotional bodywork, meditation, crystals, daily life-style practices and weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly purification practices. It is a system that flows with the energy of the seasons, the times of the day, the life stages, and our overall lifestyle.  It is a system that understands that the whole of our actions is greater than every individual action we take, there you go, 2+2= 10,000!.  Everything we do or not do, will have an effect on us, towards health building or towards misalignment and eventually disease building.

Ayurveda aims at providing the path for us to align our body-mind-emotion-spirit system in prefect harmony with Universal Cosmic Consciousness and for us to reach our fullest potential.

If you want to find out more about Ayurveda and would like to find out more about your PRAKURTI and VIKRUTI constitutions, there are two books I recommend:

* Ayurveda the Science of Self-Healing by Dr. Vasant Lad
* Ayurvedic Tongue Diagnosis by Walter 'Shantree' Kacera, D.N., Ph.D.

From the Rawllygood Kitchen

Ayurveda uses spices and herbs to charge, cool or heat the food in ways that would be beneficial to our constitutions.  Anyone, regardless of the type of foods you eat, can benefit from the healing qualities of herbs and spices, within their subtle existence they are rich with healing power and abilities to heat, cool, energize, build and detoxify.

In India, herb & spice combination of seasoning blends are called Masalas.  Masalas are easy to make and great to use in anything from soups (raw & cooked), to salads, to beans, to stews.  Making them at home guarantees us that we are using wholesome ingredients with no extra UFO's in our food.  I know what you are thinking.... since when do we have UFO's in our food, right?, right.  Well, for the past nearly almost 70 years or so, they infiltrated our food system, and sadly they are everywhere in our food industry today.  So... I can see you scratching you head, mmh, UFO's really? what is this girl going on about?  So I must disclose:  UFO= Unwanted Filling Organisms! indigestible additives that overtime will build disease and disharmony within our body systems and that have absolutely no right to be in our food systems! :)

Raw with Everything Masala-  great with raw soups, or mixed in for raw crackers, raw sliders, raw dehydrated goodies!
8 cardamon pods
4 tsp mustard seeds
4 tsp coriander seeds
4 tsp fennel seeds
2 tbsp cumin seeds
Blend in a spice mill or coffee grinder to a fine powder. Enjoy!

Nala Masala- a great addition to any drink!, I love using this one with my teas, chai, and elixirs!

1 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp black peppercorns
1 tsp cardamon
Blend in a spice mill or coffee grinder to a fine powder.
